The Google Ads advice that only works if you're rich

And what to do about it before Q1 planning locks in

Welcome, AI Strategists

💫 Current thoughts: Google acknowledged "The Great Decoupling" this summer. (is that like conscious uncoupling but for business?)Impressions hold steady. Clicks collapse. Paid CTRs on AI Overview queries dropped 68% in 15 months.

The expert advice is "shift to transactional keywords." The problem: that's where enterprises with real budgets already dominate.

My take: before deciding where your marketing dollars go, get uncomfortable clarity on your ICP. A personal trainer's clients want 60-second video tips, not PDFs. An estate planning attorney's prospects want comprehensive guides, not TikToks. The channel follows the customer. Not the other way around.

AI News Roundup for SMB Decision-Makers and Marketing Professionals

Prompt of the Week:

Let’s audit our Google Ads budget, shall we?

I run a [type of business] targeting [describe your ideal customer in detail—who they are, what keeps them up at night, where they go for answers]. Our current Google Ads monthly spend is approximately [amount], primarily on [types of keywords/campaigns].

Help me evaluate whether to maintain, reduce, or reallocate this budget:

1. Based on my ICP, which channels might reach them more effectively than paid search? Consider where they spend time, what format of content they'd value, and how trust develops in this relationship.

2. Looking at my keyword categories, which are most likely impacted by AI Overviews (informational intent) vs. still viable (urgent/transactional intent)?

3. Do I realistically have sufficient budget to compete on high-intent transactional queries against larger competitors in my space?

4. Design a 90-day test plan for ONE alternative channel that matches my ICP. Include: budget, specific tactics, hypothesis, and metrics I'll track.

Be direct about trade-offs. Hard truths over optimistic projections.
