Welcome, AI Strategists

💫 Current thoughts: Every consultant knows the pro bono tradeoff: every hour donated is an hour not billed. So you ration your generosity and feel vaguely guilty about it. Last weekend, I broke that math. A friend connected me with a civic organization that needed social media help. Discovery revealed the real need was community infrastructure — a central calendar for dozens of local groups posting events across six different Facebook pages. So I pivoted the scope, wrote detailed specs, and used Claude Code for the first time to build WhatcomConnects.org: 13+ organizations, public event submissions, safety-hardened admin workflow, zero monthly cost. Total investment: $7.68 for the domain and one weekend. The post isn't about the calendar. It's about what happens when building costs almost nothing — and the uncomfortable question of what you're doing with all that saved time.

AI News Roundup for SMB Decision-Makers and Marketing Professional

Prompt of the Week:

Most "actionable prompts" are about optimizing your workflow. This one's about someone else's.

Think of a community you're part of — your neighborhood, a volunteer org, a professional group, your kid's school. They probably have a problem that's technically simple but nobody's built a solution for because they have zero budget. You might be one weekend away from being someone's hero. Worse things have happened on a Saturday.

"I want to build a simple web application for [organization name], which is a [type of org]. Their biggest operational frustration is [describe the problem — e.g., 'coordinating community events across 12 different organizations using Facebook pages nobody checks']. I am not a developer. I need you to help me write a detailed product specification that I could hand to an AI coding tool like Claude Code or Cursor. Include: the core user stories (who uses this and what do they need), the data model (what information do we store), the key screens/pages, admin workflow requirements, security considerations, and the technology stack you'd recommend for someone deploying their first app on free infrastructure (Vercel + Supabase). Be specific enough that a coding AI could build this with minimal back-and-forth. Include a section called 'What NOT to do' with common mistakes to avoid."
